You can picture a consumer as the person standing at the very end of the line: goods and services are made and pass along, and this is the one who finally takes them in and uses them up — the who buys the bread and eats it, pays for the power and burns it.

From Latin consumere 'to use up, take up completely' = com- (here intensive, 'completely') + sumere 'to take'. A consumer is literally 'one who takes something up and uses it up' — exactly the modern picture of the end user who buys and consumes goods.

來自拉丁文 consumere「用盡、完全取用」＝ com-（此處加強語氣，「徹底」）＋ sumere「拿取」。所以 consumer 字面就是「把東西拿來、徹底用掉的人」，正好對上今天的意思：買來並用掉商品的最終使用者。
