Picture a place you go, get seen, and go home from — not somewhere you stay overnight. A clinic is a focused spot (or time) for getting treatment or advice and then leaving. The stress is often on being targeted and not having to stay, which is why the word stretches from a building to a set slot of appointment time.

Clinic traces to Greek klinē "bed" (from a root "to lean/recline") — a bed is what you lie back on. Klinikos meant "at the bedside," and a clinic began as medicine given right at the patient's bed.
clinic 一路追到希臘文 klinē「床」，再往上是「傾斜、斜靠」的字根——床就是「躺下來靠著的東西」。klinikos 原意是「在病床邊的」，最早的 clinic 就是醫生走到病人床邊看診。今天的核心「就近、針對性地看診」，正是從「守在病床邊」這個畫面長出來的。
