Hold a in your mind: squares of the same size, set in rows, and the two colours changing place one square at a time. Light, dark, light, dark. From the word’s history
Wiktionary derives the word from checker + -ed, in a family that goes back to check. The -ed ending means the thing has been made into squares, which is why the chessboard picture sits so close to the surface.
Wiktionary 把這個字拆成 checker + -ed，整個家族再往上接到 check。-ed 表示「被弄成那樣」，所以 checkered 字面就是「被弄成方格的」。棋盤的畫面一直貼在字的表面上，沒有走遠。
