Plaid is a pattern made of crossing coloured stripes, making squares — a checked pattern, often linked to Scottish tartan (each Scottish family or clan traditionally had its own plaid pattern). In modern casual speech, especially American English, 'plaid' is just used for that check pattern on shirts, blankets, and so on.
