The empty, formless state that people imagine the universe was in before any order began.
混沌
You can picture chaos as a vast, emptiness where nothing has any order yet — no shape, no arrangement, nothing in its place. It's the void people imagined before the world was sorted into anything. From that picture of 'no order at all', the everyday sense grows: drop that same total lack of order into a room, a city, or a plan, and you get a mess where nothing works together.

From Greek khaos 'abyss, that which gapes wide open, vast and empty'. In Hesiod it is the primeval emptiness before the ordered universe; the modern 'utter confusion' sense (c.1600) is an extension of that formless-void picture.
