You can picture a big violin that is too large to hold under your chin, so the player sits down and lets it rest between the knees, its tail-pin on the floor, while the bow is drawn across the strings at chest height. The size is the whole point: a bigger body of wood holds more air, and more air means a lower, warmer, more human-sounding voice.
