Hold this picture: a small, round, softly thing that fits in one hand. Bread first — but the shape travels, so anything with that same little round mound can be called a bun.

「一個手掌大小、圓圓鼓鼓的小丘」。最原始的落點是麵包：一顆一人份、表面拱起來的小圓麵包，不是切片的長條吐司，而是可以整顆捧在手裡的那種。有趣的是，這個詞真正好用的地方在於「形狀會跑」——只要是那個又圓又鼓的小團子，英語就可以借 bun 來叫它，不管它其實是麵包、是頭髮，還是身體的某個部位。
