One way to hold it: the thing that takes the bump. A bar across the front and back of a car, standing out a little, ready to meet whatever the car runs into so the car itself doesn't get hurt.

「替你挨那一下撞的那根桿子」。bump 是碰、撞，-er 是「做這件事／承受這件事的東西」，所以 bumper 就是車頭車尾那條微微凸出來的橫桿：它站在最前面，車真的碰到什麼的時候，先被撞的是它，車身和裡面的人才不會直接受傷。要注意的是，這個拼法底下其實還住著另一個意思——形容詞的「特別大、特別多」——那條線走的是「滿到溢出來的杯子」，跟撞不撞沒有關係，所以放在下面另一個家族講。
