Picture something taking up only a small stretch — and notice English measures that stretch two ways. Sometimes it is a stretch of time: the sun came out briefly. Sometimes it is a stretch of words: he explained it briefly. Which one is meant depends entirely on the verb it sits with.
可以想成：某件事只佔了一小段——而英文量這一小段的方式有兩種。有時候量的是時間：the sun came out briefly（太陽短暫露臉）。有時候量的是字數：he explained it briefly（他簡短說明了一下）。到底是哪一種，完全看它搭配的動詞：跟「出現、停留」搭就是時間，跟「說、寫」搭就是字數。
