One way to hold brickwork: stand back from a wall until the single bricks stop being separate things and become one surface. That surface is the brickwork. Step closer to the person with the trowel, and the same word names what they are doing to make it.

From brick + -work. English uses -work to gather many small pieces into one thing you can talk about (stonework, woodwork, ironwork), and also to name the doing of it.
由 brick（磚）加上字尾 -work 組成。英文的 -work 有兩個作用：把很多零散材料收成一個整體（像 stonework、woodwork、ironwork），也可以指「做這件事」。這正好對上 brickwork 的兩個意思。
