A useful picture is a name going into a book. Someone your name against a seat, a room, a table, or a date — and from that moment that thing is held for you and nobody else can take it. The word covers the arrangement itself, not the paper: what matters is that a slot in the future now has your name on it.

可以想成：有人把你的名字寫進一本簿子裡。名字一寫上去，那個位子、那個房間、那張桌子、那個日期就被扣住了，別人拿不走。booking 指的是這個「安排」本身，不是那張紙——重點在於未來的某一格已經掛上了你的名字。也因為畫面的核心比較像「寫名字進簿子」，這個字可以往兩邊長：往好的一邊是幫你保留，往壞的一邊是把你的名字記下來、留作處分的紀錄。
