A book that tells the true story of a real person's life, written by someone else.

Picture someone spending years reading another person's letters, talking to people who knew them, and then writing that whole life down from the outside — birth to death, in order, as it really happened. Biography can be thought of as that finished book: a real life told by someone who is not living it. The word then from one such book to the whole shelf of them, and to the kind of writing they all belong to.
可以想成有人花了好幾年，讀著另一個人留下的信、去找認識他的人談，然後從外面把那整段人生寫下來——從出生到過世，照著順序，寫的是真的發生過的事。biography 可以想成就是寫成的那本書：一個人的真實人生，由不是他本人的人來說。這個字接著會從「那一本」擴大成「那一整排」，再擴大成這類寫作本身。
