    Backchat is a rude or cheeky reply when someone — a parent, a teacher, a boss — is telling you what to do. You are talking back, not having a friendly chat. It is mainly British and Australian; American speakers more often say back talk. It is not a compliment. A little backchat among friends can sound like a joke; to a parent or teacher it often sounds like disrespect. The word is informal, and it usually names the talk itself: Don't give me any backchat.
