Picture pushing something off to one side — out of the centre, out of the way. That one move powers the whole word: physically aside, mentally setting a matter aside, marking a thing as off-to-the-side of the main point, and even a remark spoken 'to the side' so others don't hear it.

Aside is simply a + side — 'to/on the side'. Every modern sense is still that literal picture extended: to the side in space, to the side of your attention, to the side of the main topic.
