    A person who is very skilled at making things by hand, usually the traditional way, like bread, furniture, jewellery, or pottery, rather than by machine in a big factory. In shops and cafes today, 'artisan' is also used as a describing word — like 'artisan bread' or 'artisan coffee' — to mean it was made carefully in small amounts, which usually also means it costs more.
