You can think of arrears as the money that is walking behind the clock. Payments sit on a calendar, one to a date, and the money is supposed to arrive on the square where it belongs. Arrears is what is left standing behind those squares. Usually that is because a payment was missed, but the same picture also fits money that was always meant to come afterwards.
