From the word’s history

From Old French arc, from Latin arcus "a bow, arch, curve" — the same word as the archer's bow. The picture is the bent shape of a drawn bow.

來自古法語 arc、拉丁 arcus，本義是「弓」——就是射箭那把弓的形狀。所以 arch 最初的畫面比較像「弓一樣彎起來的線」；建築上的拱、腳底的足弓、身體拱起的動作，全都還是同一條弓形。
