You can picture the edge of a bent bow, or a slice cut from the rim of a circle — a smooth, curved line that leans the same way all along, never a straight run and never a sharp corner.

From Latin arcus 'a bow, an arch', via Old French arc. The word first named the curve of a bow and the sun's curved track across the sky — so its root is literally the bend of a drawn bow, which is still the core picture today.

源自拉丁文 arcus「弓、拱」，經古法文 arc 進入英文。這個字最早指的就是弓拉彎後的那道弧、以及太陽劃過天空的彎曲軌跡——它的根本就是「一張弓彎起來的線」，這也正是今天的核心畫面。
