You can picture appear as a thing coming into view — a moment ago there was nothing there, and now, often suddenly, it is right in front of your eyes: a face shows up at the door, a ship comes out of the fog. From that one picture of 'coming into sight' everything else grows: things that come into view on a stage or screen, on a page, or onto the market, and even the way a thing 'looks' to you when you finally see it.
