One way to see it: the name slot is empty. Someone or something is right there in front of you — you can read the letter, see the face, walk into the building — but where the name should be there is a blank, so nothing marks it out as this one and not any other.

From Greek anonumos — an- 'without' + onuma 'name' — literally 'without a name'; the modern word still turns on that missing name.
這個字拆開就是 an-（沒有）+ onuma（名字，跟 name 是遠親），希臘文 anonumos 字面意思就是「沒有名字」。現代所有用法都還踩在這個字面上：從匿名信到那種「毫無特色」的大樓，差別只在那個沒有的東西是「登記的名字」還是「認得出來的樣子」。
