An analogy is the similarity you notice, or the comparison you make, between two situations, processes, or ideas. Teachers use analogies all the time: “an atom is a bit like a tiny solar system” is an analogy — and, though actually, later you learn that one is only roughly true. In essays, “by analogy” means you are reasoning from that likeness. It is more than “it’s like…”, but the idea is the same. People also talk about a false analogy: a comparison that sounds neat but leads you the wrong way.
