Amelioration is the noun for making a bad situation better, or for the improvement itself. You can speak of the amelioration of pain, of living conditions, of a conflict. It is formal, like the verb ameliorate, and it names a of harm more often than a complete fix. Language scholars also use it in a specialist way: when a word's meaning grows kinder over time (the opposite of a word turning nastier). That second use is for the classroom of words, not for hospitals or — but it is the same idea of getting better.
