To ameliorate something is to make a bad situation better, or less harmful — not perfect, just less bad. News writers, doctors, and officials like this formal verb. You ameliorate poverty, pain, crowded wards, a harsh law's effects. You do not ameliorate a good meal, and you rarely use it for ordinary self-improvement; improve is the everyday word. Though actually, English already had a plainer verb, meliorate, from Latin for better. Speakers reshaped it after French améliorer, and the dressed-up form is the one that survived in careful writing.
