Picture yourself finishing one suggestion, then pointing sideways and saying: or we could do it this way. The first option is already on the table; this word lays a second one down beside it. The two sit side by side as equals — it does not say the first one was bad. It usually opens a sentence, followed by a , and is a handy pivot in explaining or writing.
