Built from 'other' + 'wise' (in the manner of) — literally 'in another way'. The whole word keeps pointing at an alternative: a different manner, a different case, what would happen instead. Picture a fork in the road and otherwise is the hand pointing down the OTHER path.

可以想成這個字由 other（別的）＋ -wise（以……的方式）拼成，字面就是「以別的方式」。整個字一直指向「另一條路」：另一種做法、另一種情況、或者本來會發生的別種結果。核心畫面比較像站在岔路口，otherwise 就是那隻指向「另一邊」的手。

From Old English 'on othre wisan' = 'in another manner'; -wise here is the old word for 'way/manner' (as in likewise, clockwise).
