You can picture an adventurer standing where the road splits. One way is known and safe; the other is and might cost something. Most people take the safe way. The adventurer walks toward the other one on purpose. Everything the word does grows from that one choice: what changes from sense to sense is only what the person is walking toward — excitement, money, a higher place in the world, or the next room of a game.
