A large area that is different in some way from the areas around it.

You can picture a zone as a marked-off patch of ground that is somehow different from everything touching it — draw a line around an area and say 'inside here it's like this, outside it isn't'. A swimming zone, a war zone, a no-parking zone: the same move every time — a bounded stretch set apart by one defining quality.
