Picture someone who has been put outside — outside the village, outside the group, outside the warm room. They have no home and nobody speaks to them. Everyone who passes has to decide what to feel about that figure, and the word goes wherever that feeling goes.

From the word’s history
The word comes from Old English wreċċa, which meant an exile or an outcast — someone driven out. The modern meanings keep that picture: the pity and the scorn are both things people feel about someone who has been put outside.
來源字典說這個字來自古英語 wreċċa，意思就是「被放逐的人、被趕出去的人」。今天的兩個意思都還留著那個畫面：不管是同情還是嫌惡，看的都是同一個被推到外面的人。
