You can think of would as 'will' one pace back from reality — into the imagined or the past. 'Will' points at the real future; 'would' points at a future that is only supposed, only conditional, or once looked-forward-to from an earlier time. That one backward step explains almost everything would does.

可以把 would 想成「will 往後退一步、離開現實」——退進假想，或退進過去。will 指向真實的未來；would 指向一個只是假設的、有條件的、或從過去某一刻往前看的未來。掌握這「退一步」的感覺，would 幾乎所有用法都串得起來。
