Using more words than the meaning needs — the fault of writing that takes a long road to a short place. It is always a criticism.

"Due to the fact that" instead of "because", "at this point in time" instead of "now", "it is my belief that" instead of "I think": each of those is wordiness, and English teachers mark it constantly.

"Due to the fact that"用「due to the fact that」 instead of不用 "because"「because」, "at this point in time"用「at this point in time」 instead of不用 "now"「now」, "it is my belief that"用「it is my belief that」 instead of不用 "I think"「I think」: each of those這些每一個 is都是 wordiness冗贅, and而且 English teachers英文老師 mark it constantly常常會扣分。

Notice what it is not. Wordiness is not the same as long writing — a long essay full of real ideas is not wordy, and a two-line email can be. The test is whether cutting words would lose anything. If you can take words out and the meaning stays whole, those words were wordiness.

Some of what English calls wordiness is politeness elsewhere: the padding that softens a request in Chinese business writing translates into English as wordy, and this is a real difficulty for Taiwanese students writing in English, not a personal failing. English keeps its politeness in different places — in "could you" and "would you mind" — and gets rid of the rest.
