    口語To complain again and again about small things, in a tired, unhappy voice that starts to the people who have to listen. Winge is a spelling of the word whinge, used mainly in Australia, New Zealand and Britain, and mainly in informal speech and writing.

    This is not the neutral word for telling someone about a problem. Winge carries the sound of the complaining itself: drawn out, repeated, a little childish. The person who chooses this word is usually already fed up with hearing it, so it is almost never a compliment. You winge about a thing, and you winge to a person: he winges to me about the bus. Whinge is the more usual spelling in books and newspapers; winge turns up in informal writing and in Australian and New Zealand books. One way to hold this word: a small, drawn-out complaining sound that keeps coming back. Nothing serious is wrong, nobody is asking for the problem to be fixed, and the person listening has heard it already. Everything winge does grows out of that sound — whether we treat it as the action (he winges) or as one helping of it (have a winge).
