Wimp can be pictured as someone who folds at the first push. Lean on him and he moves; ask him to go first and he waits. The word then points at two places where that folding shows: the nerve and the body. Both are said to hurt.

The source calls it possibly a clipping of whimper, and notes that the name was familiar enough in 1930s America to be used for two famously soft characters. If that is right, the picture started as a small sound made instead of a stand.
