    正式During the time that something is happening, or at the same time as something else. It means the same as 'while' but sounds more formal.

    Mei read a book quietly whilst she waited for the bus.

    逐字美安靜地看書，當她在等公車的時候。

    whilst 跟 while 意思完全一樣，只是聽起來更正式、更偏英式書面。可以表示「在…的同時」，也可以用來對比兩件事（Some like tea, whilst others prefer coffee）。日常口語多半用 while 就好。

Picture two things laid side by side on the same stretch of time: the rain falling, and you reading by the window. Whilst is the word that holds those two stretches together — it says one thing is going on inside the span of the other. It is the same tool as while, just wearing a suit.

可以想成：把兩件事並排放在同一段時間上——外面在下雨，你在窗邊看書。whilst 就是把這兩段時間扣在一起的那個接點，說「這件事發生的期間，那件事也在跑」。它跟 while 是同一個工具，只是穿了西裝：意思完全一樣，語感比較正式、書面，在英式英文的報告、文章裡常見，日常口語裡多半還是講 while。
