    「were」是動詞 be 的過去式，用在「你、我們、你們、他們」（you / we / they）或複數名詞後面，描述過去的狀態、位置或身份。中文通常譯成「是」或「在」，但英文必須有 were，不能省略。was 用在 I / he / she / it（單數），were 用在 you / we / they（複數或 you）。

Were is simply 'be' put into the past for you / we / they / a plural subject — the word that says how things stood or where they were at some earlier time. Picture pointing back in time at more than one thing and saying what was true of them then: 'they were happy', 'the keys were on the table'.

可以想成 were 就是 be 放進過去、專門配 you／we／they 或複數主詞的形態——用來說「過去的時候，這些東西是什麼樣、在哪裡」。畫面比較像你回頭指著不只一個東西，講出它們那時候的情況：they were happy（他們那時很快樂）、the keys were on the table（鑰匙那時在桌上）。
