Think of heat moving into something that was cold, and the reading going up while you watch. That is the picture in warming: not heat that is already there, but heat arriving. A bowl of soup does it to a person, the sun does it to an ocean, and English will let two people do it to each other.

Wiktionary records warming as warm plus -ing, going back through Middle English warmyng to Old English wærming. The ending is what turns the change into a thing you can name, count and measure.
Wiktionary 記載 warming 就是 warm 加上 -ing，經中古英文 warmyng，一路回到古英文 wærming。-ing 的作用是把「變暖」這個動作變成一件可以命名、可以測量的事。所以 the warming of the ocean 字面上就是「海洋變暖這件事」。
