Utilitarian describes something made to be useful and practical, not beautiful or fancy — a utilitarian building might look plain and boring, but it works well. The word has a second, more serious meaning in philosophy: utilitarianism is the idea that the best choice is the one that brings the most happiness to the most people. In daily English, you'll meet the first meaning far more often.
