Look at the two small words inside it: up front — at the very front, where a thing is easy to see and where it comes first. A football player up front stands ahead of the whole team. Money paid up front sits at the front of the deal, before any work. A person who is upfront puts the awkward fact at the front of the conversation, instead of leaving you to find it later. The front can be a place on a pitch, a point in time, or a place in what somebody tells you.
