Trusty is an adjective meaning reliable and able to be trusted - it's usually used for something you've had for a long time and that always works well, like 'my trusty old bike' or 'her trusty umbrella.' It has a warm, slightly old-fashioned, often half-joking feeling, more than a plain, everyday word for 'reliable.' As a noun, 'a trusty' has a very different, specific meaning: a prisoner who is given extra freedom and easier jobs because the staff trust them.
