You can picture picking something up here and carrying it across to there — moving people or goods from one place to another. That one act of 'carrying across' fans out two ways: literally (the buses and trains that do the carrying, the business of hauling goods, a ship that carries troops, even shipping a prisoner off to a distant land), and figuratively (a song or a smell that 'carries you away' to another time, or a joy so strong it sweeps your whole feeling somewhere else).

From Latin trans- 'across' + portare 'to carry' — literally 'carry across', which is exactly the physical core; the emotional 'carried away' sense is a metaphor on the same root.
