Think of two hands and a counter between them. Something goes one way, money comes back the other way, and then it happens again, and again, all day. Trading is not the single swap but the whole stream of swaps: the counter staying busy. That is why it takes no a in front of it and why English asks how heavy or how light it was, the way you would ask about traffic or rain.
