The word is simply its two parts stuck together: toe + nail. 'Nail' here is not the metal kind you hammer into wood — it is the hard, flat, slightly curved shell that grows on the end of a finger or a toe. Put 'toe' in front and you have named which ones you mean: the ten on your feet, not the ten on your hands.
