A threshold is the piece of floor right at the bottom of a doorway, the part you step over to go into a room or building. People often say 'cross the threshold' to mean walking into a new place. The word is also used for a point where something starts to happen or change. For example, your 'pain threshold' is how much pain you can take before it becomes too much, and a 'threshold' in a rule might mean the smallest amount needed before something applies, like 'you must earn above this threshold to pay tax.'
