A tale can be pictured as a story that still has a inside it. Unlike the flatter word story, tale keeps the voice: someone is speaking, someone is listening, and the telling may stretch a little. That is why the word pulls in two directions at once — towards old stories and legends with a touch of magic, and towards 'well, that's his version of it'.

tale 可以想成「有人口頭講給你聽的一段故事」。它跟 story 最大的差別在那個「講」字還留著：背後彷彿有個說話的人、有個聽的人，語氣可能誇張，細節也可能被加油添醋。所以 tale 用起來常帶兩種味道——一種是老故事、傳說那種帶點魔幻色彩的；另一種是「這是他的說法，你聽聽就好」。
