    A word, or a part of a word, with one vowel sound in it. You say it as one beat, so cat is one syllable and wa-ter is two.

    syllable 是英文用來數「一個字唸幾拍」的單位：一拍裡面有一個母音的聲音，那一拍就是一個 syllable。cat 一拍、wa-ter 兩拍、el-e-phant 三拍——短的字整個就是一個音節，長的字要切成好幾個。可以想成把幾個音「一把抓起來」變成一團，一團就是一拍，這也剛好是這個字很老的意思。中文一個國字幾乎都是一拍，所以「幾個字」和「幾個音節」常常一樣多；英文的一個字卻可能有好幾拍，這是最需要轉過來的地方。

Picture one beat of the mouth. Each time your voice opens into a vowel, that's one syllable — cat is one beat, wa-ter is two, in-ter-est-ing is four. Clap while you say a word and you're counting syllables.
