Picture the one day in the week when the shops open late, nobody has to be anywhere, and the street is quiet — the day between Saturday and Monday. Around that quiet day a whole set of associations grew up: church clothes, and a slow, pace. The other two meanings are those associations, and each one is locked inside a fixed phrase.
