Hold something up and look closely: instead of one smooth piece, it is made of many long thin threads. That is the whole of stringy. The threads may be real, like the fibres in a pumpkin or the roots in a pot, or they may just be what the eye sees — hair hanging in separate pieces, or muscle showing like cord under the skin.
