Picture a line that goes straight ahead with nothing in the way: no bends, no detours, nothing to slow you down. On a racetrack that line is a place, the stretch between two curves. In a sentence about time, the same line stops being a place and becomes an order of events: you go from now to doing it with nothing in between.
