Think of one spot on the floor, and the person who belongs in it is not there today. Someone else walks over, stands in that exact spot, and holds it. They are not taking the spot away — when the first person comes back, they step out again. A stand-in is whoever, or whatever, is standing in that spot for now.

可以想成一個空著的位置：本來該站在那裡的人今天不在。另一個人先走過去，站在那個點上，把空缺補起來。他不是要把位置搶走；原本的人回來，他就退開。stand-in 指的就是「現在站在那個位置上的人」——有時候也可以是先擺上去頂著的東西。
