Speculation is when people guess about something, but they don't really know if it's true. It can be guessing why something happened, or guessing what might happen in the future. In money and business, speculation also means buying something (like stock, or land) because you hope its price will go up later, not because you plan to really use it — this way of buying is a bit risky.
