A trap for catching a small animal, usually a loop of wire or rope that tightens around it. Used figuratively, a "snare" is anything that traps someone without them noticing at first, like the snare of debt. It's also the name for a snare drum — a drum with metal wires stretched under it that make a sharp, buzzing sound.
